1. Phishing Links in Social Media Ads

Cybercriminals often use social media platforms to spread phishing links disguised as legitimate ads. You may see an enticing deal on a popular social platform like Facebook or Instagram, but clicking the link takes you to a fake website designed to steal your personal information.

How to Spot It:

  • Check the URL: Before clicking, hover over the link to check the actual destination. If it doesn’t match the brand’s official site or looks suspicious, don’t click.

  1. Use Secure Payment Methods: Always use credit cards or payment services like PayPal that offer fraud protection. Avoid using direct transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards as these are difficult to trace or recover.
  2. Research Before You Buy: Before making a purchase on an unfamiliar site or through a social media ad, take a few minutes to research the company. Check reviews, look for contact information, and verify the site’s security features.
  3. Be Wary of Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals: Scammers often lure in victims with unbelievable deals. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Secure your online accounts, including social media profiles, by enabling 2FA. This adds an extra layer of protection, making it harder for hackers to gain access to your accounts.
